The vision of Trauma Support SA is to train, mentor and guide individuals, organizations and groups of people to assist Survivors of Trauma. Our Training material is research-based and front-line tested, and presented by facilitators with decades of on scene experience.

Introduction to Trauma Support & PFA

This 4 day workshop spanning 3 months (including Telephonic Mentorship & Practical Exercises) has been developed to build the capacity of community based structures to provide better assistance to victims of violent crime and traumatic incidents. Presented by Philip Stoneman who has 22 years experience as a Chaplain, Trauma Support Counselor and Training Facilitator. The course is interactive and highly informative and will provide you with the necessary skills needed to provide on scene and follow-up support to trauma victims.

The course material includes the following:

  • Psychological First Aid as per WHO material
  • Introduction to traumatic stress
  • Traumatic stress response.
  • Definition of traumatic stress.
  • Types of trauma & Types of victims
  • The Phases of traumatic stress.
  • The differences between Post traumatic stress reaction and Post traumatic stress disorder.
  • Active Listening Skills
  • Supporting Victims of Trauma
  • Trauma Support intervention Model
  • Developing a referral network

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of this course you will:

  • Be able to identify the physiological, emotional, cognitive, behavioural and social signs of traumatic stress following a traumatic event;
  • Understand how different people react in different ways to the same traumatic event;
  • Be able to listen and provide appropriate trauma support to trauma survivors;
  • Recognize the range of resources that trauma survivors draw on for support,
  • Refer survivors to the appropriate level of care where necessary;
  • Provide appropriate emergency response to trauma survivors - Psychological First Aid
  • Manage and protect your own mental, emotional and physical health as a trauma care worker.

  • Each day's training has a R450 pp fee, payable prior to training day.
  • Attendees of previous PFA 2 day workshops will be allowed to attend Day 1 at NO COST.
  • 2 manuals will be provided to all new attendees : The 'PFA (WHO) Participant manual' and the Trauma-Wise "Introduction to Trauma" Manual.
  • All registered members will be placed onto a Whattsapp group for further mentorship development
  • Registered attendees will be provided with a login to online training course with additional resources, exercises and videos.
  • The PFA & TRAUMA SUPPORT CERTIFICATES will only be presented to participants if ALL 4 Days are attended and the Practical Logbook completed in full.
